Railway DC-DC converters with pure convection cooling

Ruggedly constructed, convection cooled railway DC-DC converters. Suitable for installation on uneven or thermally non-conductive surfaces.

The LTH 65R-F3TH series of heavy-duty, railway DC-DC converters deliver up to 200W output power with pure convection cooling. Designed for float charging hold-up batteries for railway on-board peripheral equipment, the units are also suitable for a range of other transportation and industrial applications. The converters operate from a 12Vdc (10.5-16V) input and deliver 12Vdc, 24Vdc, 48Vdc or the corresponding float voltages. Other input values and output voltages up to 125Vdc are available. An optional built-in redundancy diode allows for paralleling and N+1 operation or back-up battery connection. An optional output fail alarm (Form C) can also be included on request. Typical conversion efficiency is 85% at full load.

Cooling is via heat-sink fins on the top of the converters. This mechanical feature makes the design ideal for installations where surface mounting is not possible. The units can also be installed on thermally non-conductive surfaces, such as plastic, or on curved, uneven surfaces. They are rated for operation over a -25°C to +55°C temperature range for full specification with no derating required; wider temperature ranges are available on request. The rugged converters are designed to withstand high levels of shock and vibration to IEC 61373 Cat 1 A&B. The internal boards are conformal coated to provide protection from humidity and airborne contaminants.

The LTH 65R-F3TH units meet the requirements of EN50155 for electronic equipment used on railway rolling stock. The converters have heavy filtering on the input and output, and comply with EN50121-3-2 EMI requirements. They meet EN61000-4-2 (ESD), EN61000-4-3 (RF Immunity), EN61000-4-4 (Fast Transients), EN61000-4-6 (Conducted Immunity) and EN45545. Other protection includes 3000Vdc input-output isolation, reverse polarity protection, overload protection, rectangular current limiting with short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown in case of insufficient cooling.
